Kanotix ist ein vollständiges, von CD bootendes Linux-System mit grafischer Oberfläche auf der Basis von Knoppix.
Es handelt sich um eine sogenannte "Live-CD", eine Festplatte ist zum Arbeiten nicht erforderlich. Auf Datenträger wie Festplatten, USB-Stick, Disketten kann jedoch zugegriffen werden. Dateien auf NTFS-Partitionen können auf jeden Fall gelesen werden, (experimenteller) Schreibzugriff ist (auf eigenes Risiko) möglich. Kanotix kann auch auf eine (freie!) Partition installiert werden.

It is now possible to test Nvidia-drivers from the Live-CD without having internet-connection. They are included as an archive and only need to be installed.
Another highlight is the new KANOTIX-Controlcenter knxcc to be found in KDE-kcontrol under KANOTIX or in textmode in konsole.
For fresh installs this preview is to be preferred, because it makes a big dist-upgrade unneccessary right after install.
A known bug is that icons will only appear on the desktop after a device has been mounted; an alternative is to use konqueror media:/ directly
